Simply stated, streaming video is a method of transmitting movies of any length over the Internet in real-time without any delays. The process of creating a streaming video file involves capturing the audio and video track from tape and then compressing the data to a small fraction of its normal size. The resulting data file can then be transmitted over the Internet in the exact same way as any other data or graphics file and does not require the use of special server software as is generally believed.

In order to play in real-time over the Internet, the file size has to be extremely small in comparison to a standard AVI or QuickTime video file. To accomplish this, a great deal of compression is used during the conversion process which results in picture quality being somewhat less than a standard AVI or QuickTime file and the frames per second being lower as well. This degradation in picture quality is widely accepted on the Internet because it is understood that quality has to be sacrificed in order to achieve real-time delivery.
